<title>ABSTRACT</title>
<p>It is herein presented the unprecedented occurrence of <italic>Cloudina carinata</italic> Cortijo <italic>et al</italic>., 2010 in the American continent. This new occurrence expanded the geographic distribution of this species, until now reported from sections in Spain and Siberia. The assembled biomineralizing metazoans <italic>Cloudina carinata</italic>, <italic>Cloudina lucianoi</italic> (Beurlen &#x0026; Sommer, 1957) and <italic>Corumbella werneri</italic> Hahn <italic>et al</italic>., 1982 are presented for the first time from the Tamengo Formation, Corumb&#x00E1; Group, Porto Figueiras section, Corumb&#x00E1; Municipality, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. This new occurrence could be employed as an additional biostratigraphic tool for international correlation of the terminal Ediacaran, as well as for palaeobiogeographic and palaeoecologic reconstructions.</p>

<title>RESUMEN</title>
<p>Se documenta en este resumen la primera aparici&#x00F3;n de <italic>Cloudina carinata</italic> Cortijo <italic>et al</italic>., 2010 en el continente americano. Esta nueva aparici&#x00F3;n extiende la distribuci&#x00F3;n geogr&#x00E1;fica de esta especie, hasta ahora restringida a Espa&#x00F1;a y Siberia. Se presenta por primera vez en la Formaci&#x00F3;n de Tamengo (Corumb&#x00E1;, Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil) la asociaci&#x00F3;n de metazoos mineralizados compuesta por <italic>Cloudina carinata</italic>, <italic>Cloudina lucianoi</italic> (Beurlen &#x0026; Sommer, 1957) y <italic>Corumbella werneri</italic> Hahn <italic>et al</italic>., 1982. Esta asociaci&#x00F3;n podr&#x00ED;a ser &#x00FA;til como marcador bioestratigr&#x00E1;fico en las correlaciones internacionales del Ediac&#x00E1;rico terminal, as&#x00ED; como para futuras reconstrucciones paleobiogeogr&#x00E1;ficas y paleoecol&#x00F3;gicas.</p>

<title>Introduction</title>
<p>This work deals with the unprecedented occurrence of <italic>Cloudina carinata</italic>
Cortijo <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0004">2010</xref> in the American continent. <italic>C. carinata</italic> had documented occurrences in Spain (Cortino <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0004">2010</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0005">2015</xref>) and Siberia, Russia (Kontorovich <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0012">2008</xref>), and now a new occurrence from the Tamengo Formation at Porto Figueiras section, Corumb&#x00E1; Municipality, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil is presented.</p>
<p><italic>Cloudina</italic> species have wide geographic distribution reported from Namibia (Grant, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0008">1990</xref>), Oman (Conway Morris <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0003">1990</xref>) , South China (Hua <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0011">2005</xref>; Cai <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0002">2013</xref>; Cortijo <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0005">2015</xref>), Spain (Cortijo <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0004">2010</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0005">2015</xref>), Siberia (Terleev <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0014">2011</xref>; Kontorovich <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0012">2008</xref>); Mexico (Sour-Tovar <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0013">2007</xref>), Brazil (Ad&#x00F4;rno <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0001">2017</xref>), Argentina and Uruguay (Gaucher <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0007">2006</xref>), Canada (Hofmann &#x0026; Mountjoy, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0010">2001</xref>), Paraguay (Warren <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0015">2011</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0016">2013</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0017">2014</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0018">2017</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0019">2019</xref>) and the USA (Grant, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0008">1990</xref>; Zhuravlev <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0020">2012</xref>).</p>
<p><italic>Cloudina carinata</italic> occurs in the uppermost Ediacaran section of Spain, in association with <italic>C. lucianoi</italic> (Beurlen &#x0026; Sommer, 1957) in the Membrillar olistostrome (Cortijo <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0004">2010</xref>) and the Navalpino Anticline, central Spain (Cortijo <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0005">2015</xref>). Occurrences of <italic>Cloudina carinata</italic> and <italic>C. lucianoi</italic> have also been reported from Siberia, Russia (Terleev <italic>et al</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="cit0014">2011</xref>), and now it is herein presented the first occurrence of this species in South America from the yellowish siltstones of the Tamengo Formation.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="sec2" sec-type="results">
<title>Results</title>
<p>A new occurrence of <italic>Cloudina carinata</italic> is presented herein, in the Porto Filgueiras section, outcropping along the Paraguay river bank in a locality nowadays called Marina do Gelson, at the geographic coordinates: -18.998748&#x00B0; S and -57.629023&#x00B0;W, approximately 750 m to the west of the Sobramil Port section. At this locality, <italic>C. carinata</italic> occurs in association with <italic>C. lucianoi</italic> and <italic>Corumbella werneri</italic>. The implication of this new occurrence of <italic>C. carinata</italic> in the Tamengo Formation is discussed herein under the light of its contribution to the palaeobiogeographic distribution of <italic>Cloudina</italic> species, the palaeogeography of Western Gondwana, the palaeoecology and the chronobiostratigraphy of the uppermost Ediaracan sections.</p>
<p>The study material consists of silty impression moulds of the exterior wall of <italic>Cloudina carinata</italic> (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="f0001">Fig. 1</xref>). The taxonomic assignment of <italic>C.carinata</italic> from the Tamengo Formation is the result of morphometric and morphologic analysis. Regarding the mode of occurrence, <italic>C. carinata</italic> and <italic>Corumbella werneri</italic> occur in pelitic layers of the Tamengo Formation, while <italic>C. lucianoi</italic> occurs in carbonate rocks. This could reflect, to a certain extent, that <italic>C.lucianoi</italic> preferred palaeoecological conditions with clear waters and without major siliciclastic input, where carbonate could precipitate, whereas <italic>C. carinata</italic> and <italic>Corumbella werneri</italic> dwelled in probably deeper and calmer conditions, with more detrital influx. The occurrence of <italic>Cloudina carinata</italic> in the Tamengo Formation increases the potential for the inclusion of the Tamengo Formation in the international biostratigraphic correlation.</p>

<title>Conclusions</title>
<p>It is herein reported the first occurrence of <italic>Cloudina carinata</italic> in the American continent, from the Tamengo Formation in the Porto Figueiras section (Corumb&#x00E1; Municipality, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil). The importance of this new occurrence is the expansion of the geographic distribution of <italic>Cloudina carinata</italic>, indispensable for global correlations. Additionally, this new occurrence could collaborate to the inclusion of the South America sections in international biostratigraphic correlation and palaeobiogeographic and palaeoecological reconstructions.</p>
