Abstract

The sub-basin of «Alcolea de Calatrava~ (Ciudad Real, Spain) is composed exclusively of Neogene and Quaternary deposits, the first consisting of detrital, palustrine and lacustrine materials, notably influenced by the volcanism of the region (volcanism of «Campo de Calatrava»). These Neogene materials have been arranged in three informal stratigraphic units: detrital, carbonate and detrital-carbonate; which follows one another in a gradual way except the latter, limited underneath by a discontinuity related to volcanic collapses. Altogether these units represent a sedimentary succession which starts with the accumulation of alluvial fan deposits that evolve laterally and vertically to marshy sediments with more or less subaerial exposure features and finally to lacustrine sediments of small extent, which correspond to ancient ponds installed inside the depressions formed by volcanic collapses. The important mammal locality of «Las Higueruelas » is located in one of these depressions.
