Mastodont fossil remains from Chile are described and discussed from a taxonomic point of view. A single species must be considered: Cuvieronius hyodon (Fischer) for the Late Pleistocene of Chile. Some of its characteristics are analyzed and compared with those of other mastodons from different localities in South America. Paleoecological considerations are revised and potential migration routes from the north, towards the Chilean territory, are also discussed.
