A classification of the sedimentary materials in three great groups is proposed: Detrital, Precipitation and Organic main deposits, depending on the genetic process (transport and accumulation as solid particles, precipitation from solutions, organic remains). The subdivision into these groups is made by standardizing and systematizing the most used criteria and terms (grain size and composition) in a stricter way. This systematization seems to offer the advantage of allowing a larger and easier sequencialization of the teaching processes in relation to this subject, and easier leaming, specially for secondary level students.
