The geochemical, mineralogical and petrographical features of slates from the Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain) are studied. On the basis of these data, the origin and metamorphic conditions undergone by these materials are discussed. Finally, the infiuence of mineralogical, textural and microstructural factors on their use as industrial rocks (roofing slates) is estimated.
