The study of several Palaeozoic shales has allowed to establish a definite correlation between organic matter, or iron content, and colour (as determined with a reflectometer). Hyperbolic curves obtained by plotting the data, show correlation coefficients above 0.9. Colour in rocks is inf!uenced by carbonate content whereas reflectivity is increased by it. Use of a reflectometer, or the Munsell chart of colours, is then proposed as an easy, fast and accurate enough method of estimating organic matter or iron content on this type of pelitic rocks.
