Abstract

The effect of grinding on crystallinity, particle size and solubility of two samples of kaolinite was studied. The standard Gibbs free energies of formation of different ground samples were calculated from solubility measurements, and show a direct relationship between Gibbs free energy and particle size-crystallinity variation. Values of -3752.2 and -3776.4 KJ/mol. were determinated for ΔGºl (am) and ΔGºl (crys) of kaolinite, respectively. A new thermodinamic equation that relates ΔGºl to particle size is proposed. This equation can probably be extended to clay mineals.
