Abstract

The «series base», of the Aljibe unit include several formations with different lithostratigraphic characteristics. A mineralogical study of the materials suggests the following evolution:

Chertified limestones - Benaiza formation - Palmones tunnel sequence

which can be associated with the stratigraphic position deduced from the previous established datings. Some of the determined mineralogical characteristics (progresive increase of the percentage content of phyllosilicates, kaolinite and swelling minerals) reveal changes in the source area. Other mineralogical data (carbonate content, carbonate type. silicification process) indicate the relative characteristics of the original conditions under which the material was deposited and its diagenesis.
