Abstract

This paper deals with the stratigraphy and sedimentology of the Culm facies in a sector of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (South-Portuguese Zone). In the studied area two main turbidite systems occur. The WNW-ESE one is made with turbidites of type I and III (Mutti, 1985), the other one, with a direction NE-SW, includes turbidites of type 11 and 111. The contemporary interrelation between the two main turbidite systems suggests a catastrophic way of deposition for this sediments. This Gibraleón area is interpreted as the place where this interrelation occur, their facies cycles including intermediate characteristic of the two systems.
