The nature and characteristics of the boundary separating the Ossa-Morena (OMZ) and SouthPortuguese (SPZ) Zones is a major topic of discussion in the geologic literature dealing with the Southern Branch of the lberian Variscan Fold Belt In the present paper, the principal evidences on the geology of the OMZ southernmost unit, the Aracena Massif, are recorded. A scheme relative to the characteristics of the outcropping materials, the number and features of the deformational events, and tbe type of metamorphism present, is stablished here in order to build a geologic framework useful all over the massif. Finally, a group of suggestions concerning the features and meaning of the OMZ-SPZ boundary between Westphalian and Permian times are reviewed and proposed.
