In this paper, the main stratigraphical and sedimentological characteristics of the filling beds from the Cerdanya basin (Eastern Pyrenees) are described. Two units have been distinguished: the Inferior Neogene Unit and the Superior Neogene Unit, each one being the consequence of different tectonic situations. The Inferior Unit corresponds to the formation period of the basin and its subsequent evolution under the influence of the directional slip of the NE-SW La Tet fault. On the contrary, the Superior Unit corresponds to a later extensive phase. The revision of the mammalian content of the many classical fossiliferous localities in the Inferior Unit allows its adscription to the Vallesian. On the other hand, the new locality of Can Vilella indicated an Upper Turolian (MN 13, uppermost Miocene) for the Superior Unit
