Abstract

In this work the mineralogy of several smectite-rich Aptian-Conician Subbetic sequences is analyzed, with speciaI interest in the chemical composition of such components. The origin of main clay minerals is considered bearing in mind the similarity of our data and those found. in surrounding areas of submarine volcanic rocks. This fact and the presence of palygorskyte and clinoptilolite in a.ssocialion with smectites., leads us to think that, although some of me smectites heve a detritic origin, the greater pert are authigenic clays and/or halmyrolityc products of basaltic rocks.
The relatively low content in iron and magnesium (between 0.6 and 0.9 by haIf unit-cell) is interpreted as loss of such elements in the diagenetic evolution of smectites towards illitic terms.
