After a study of the partition coefficients and their dependence on temperature, pressure and composition, are reviewed the simplest models which describe the trace element behavior during partial melting, fractional crystallization and mixing process. Finally, various methods for the recognition of the process responsible for the variation of trace elements concentrations in a suite of rocks are discussed
