Abstract

The lower Neogene deposits of the Mijares valley (mainly fluvial facies) are filling three paralell• grabens controlled by synsedimentary ENE normal faults. This structural pattern is created during a moderate compression phase with an ENE horizontal σ1 axis which sometimes can be permuted with the vertical σ2. Afterwards. a second SSE to S compression affects these deposits. The age of the basin can be established in the Upper Aragonian-Lower Vallesian bested on the Micromamal fauna found in two localities. Other sites in the cetral-oriental lberian Chain also show compressive deformations in well-dated deposits of Agenian and Aragonian ages. The compression still continues in this region during the Lower and Middle Miocene, the passage to the extension regime talking place in the Vanesian.
