The main tectonic features of the metasediments in the Ciudad Rodrigo area, in the western part of the Salamanca province, are given in this paper.
The metamorphic rocks –quartzites, conglomerates and slates, as well as some calc-silicates layers– were folded during the Herecynian arogeny, although a pre-Hercynian tectonic phase, without schistosity , is also locally present.
The Hercynian orogeny in the area is characterized by three main tectonic stages which gave place 10 folds trending NW, E and NE respectively. The first one, which produced axial plane schistcsity, was the most important, while the other two , which occasionally originated strain-slip schistosity, are occasionally present. Finally, there are some other tectonic structures, such as kink-bands, and fracturing which are late Hercynian age.
Several granitic intrusions developed simultaneously with the main tectonic phases, especially the first and the second ones.
