Abstract

An ensemble of 10 footprints forming a trackway, lower Cretaceous (possibly Valanginian) in age, have been found in Cornago (La Rioja, Spain). The imprints are tridactylous, belonging to a ornithopod dinosaur of graviportal and mesaxonic type. If one considers the family Iguanodontidae as a "evolutive grade" the trackmaker can probably be included within this taxon. Two methodological proposals (Alexander, 1976 & Demathieu, 1984) have been considered to estimate the speed of the trackmaker. Both methods have yielded similar values of speed (5.39 and 4.67 Km/h, respectively). In order to minimize the error introduced in the Alexander's method, it is proposed to carry out a statistical analysis (within the taxon in which the trackmaker is included) for the estimate of the length ratio mean between the autopodial imprint and the Iimb. The speed values are coincident with the inferred speed values proposed for larger ornithopods.
