Abstract

The Sedimentological and Paleontological charactetristics of La Portera Locality have been studied in this work. Four different asociations of facies belonging to several fluvial environments can be distinguished: a) Sandstone and conglomerate channel deposits, showing point bar strutuctures; b) Red clays of flood plain deposits; e) Lacustrine micrite limestones; d) Palustrine carbonaceous marls.
Molluscs are associated to flood plain deposits, where they have more diversity, with associations or terrestrial as well as acuatic species. In the point bars there are acuatic prosobranchs and bivalves, whereas in the lacustrine limestones only molluscs casts are found.
Mammals are represented by Rodents (Paraethomys anomalus), Equids (Hipparion sp. l, similar to those found in Venta del Moro locality) and Hippopotamids (Hexaprotodon crusafonti). The find or a mandible of Hexaprotodon crusafonti permits uS a new definition of the diagnosis of this specie. On basis of these paleontological data the age of La Portera locality has been stalablished as Ventian (NM 13 MEIN'scale).
